Dominating the top 2400 m. tall Corcovado Mountain in Rio is certainly the most memorable monument of Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor). standing at over 100 meters high, two and a half million pounds with arms outstretched and open, welcoming hands, Christ keeps a vigil for 24 hours for all the inhabitants of Rio.

The idea of a religious statue was conceived in 1921 by Carlos Oswaldo who sketched a picture of Christ carrying a cross. When engineer Heitor da Silva Costa was commissioned to build the monument has enlisted the help of Polish sculptor Paul Landowski and the project was changed to its present form and it was agreed that the statue was carved in France.

Originally given the biblical name ‘Pinaculo by Tentacao’ (Pinnacle of Temptation) by early Portuguese, its name was later changed to Corcovado because of its resemblance to a hunchback.
Located within the Tijuca Forest National Park and up over 2300 meters high, this visibly discernible natural landmark is known worldwide as the site of the 100 ft high statue of Christ the Redeemer.
