Somewhere In Time, a 1980 film starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour, tells the story of a young playwright who travel back in time to find true love on Mackinac Island. Whatever you think of the film (which was originally highlighted but has become a cult classic), this is an appropriate metaphor for Mackinac Island (pronounced-and-sometimes spelled “Mackinaw Island”). These islanders have been working hard to transport back to the old lovers of Victorian charm and horse-drawn carriage.

Mackinac Island located on Lake Huron in the Straits of Mackinac between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsula. Stepping up to the island is a bit like stepping back in time; 500 residents remain proud of their village of Victorian charm. Cars are prohibited on the island, the people get around by foot or bicycle, or (if you’re a tourist) with horse-drawn carriage. Eighty percent of the island is occupied by the Mackinac Island State Park: “There are 1,800 hectares under a canopy of cedar and Birches,” according to the park web site. “Limestone cliffs tower above the wild flowers and crystal waters.” Although camping is prohibited, this park offers several historic sites: Fort Mackinac, built by the British during the American Revolution, providing panoramic views from the highest point of the island, and building early-19th century who created the city center when the island was a hub for the fur trade. Some national park historic sites located on the mainland, including a reconstructed 1715 fur-trading village of France and Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse.
